To-Let: Apartments and Houses to rent

Brooklyn Daily Eagle

The search for housing was just as frustrating in 1861 as it is today. Although rents were seemingly less expensive, Brooklyn's population explosion caused scarcity, especially for apartments at rents affordable to the working classes and the poor. This advertisement from the Brooklyn Daily Eagle shows houses and apartments "to let," meaning for rent.
