Strolling on the beach at Coney Island

Can you imagine playing on the beach in long woolen pants and skirts with jackets, shawls and hats? That was beach fashion in the 1860s and 1870s. Despite the heat and discomfort of their attire, people flocked to Coney Island for the water, the sun and cool breezes, and, just as today, the chance for a day of relaxation and fun with their families.
