Vanderhoef's Memorandum from Prisoner of War Records

This document records James W. Vanderhoef's status as a prisoner of war. He was a Union officer captured at the Battle of Gettysburg on July 1, 1863. The Union and Confederate Armies kept detailed records about the status of soldiers, and these records were later preserved by the United States National Archives.

To read more about Civil War military records, see the National Archives: Research in Military Records: Civil War (http://www.archives.gov/research/civil-war/).

For more about Vanderhoef's military history and prisoner of war records, see Documents 76 and 77.
