Begin Beginning Now
by Lindsay Packer

In my work, children, animals and other "beginners" attempt to understand the world and each other. I often paint or cut away contextual information, leaving characters directly vulnerable to one another and to interpretation. Will the dog bite or is it laughing? Will the boy fall or is he jumping?

I may begin with a fragment or use an entire book page in combination with ink, gouache, graphite and glitter. My work creates new landscapes, storylines and narrative juxtapositions, some inspired by an image's original context and others in conflict with it.

Like the places a child's imagination can travel before the world is explained, understood and defined, these collages are inherently open-ended and unsettled. They are curious beginnings.
