Capturing the Spirit of the Book / Interpreting Nature: A Collection of Artists Books

The work for this exhibition was selected by me from my earlier and current book works. In my opinion, an important part of art is to challenge, entertain and encourage a dialogue.

Sandra Jackman has exhibited her work at the National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington, D.C., TJ Museum in Pennsylvania, HarperCollins Publications in Manhattan, Art Works in Los Angeles and other venues. In 2004, she was a panel moderator for Artists Talk on Art, an exploration of contemporary trends in book art. In 2001, she was a guest curator for a book art exhibition at Hillwood Art Museum at the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University.

The War Tome

I create photographs and photo-based artists' books that explore the intersection of art and science and the idea of constructed landscapes through the collection and creation of natural elements. I'm inspired by natural history illustrations, Victorian botany journals, Audubon's Birds of America and the studies of Karl Blossfeldt. I want the viewer of my books to consider the world that exists within a landscape and the different ways upon which it can be elaborated.

I'm interested in the medium of artists' books because they provide an accessible, personal and intimate experience for the viewer. Books can also act as a contained exhibition that can be viewed and experienced repeatedly without the timing or location limits of a physical exhibition.

Paula McCartney teaches photography and the history of photography at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design and the College of Visual Arts. She has exhibited her work at Klompching Gallery in Brooklyn, which represents her. She has also shown her work at Affirmation Arts in Manhattan, Herron School of Art and Design in Indianapolis and other venues. In 2010, she won the Minnesota State Arts Board Artist Initiative Grant, in addition to other grants and fellowships she has been awarded through the years. She earned a M.F.A. in photography from San Francisco Art Institute and a B.F.A. in photography from Empire State College.
