Artist Statement

My images are often taken from the natural world, books, tools of the sciences, and explorations of language. I often work with a vocabulary of images to look for relationships and patterns. Grouping these images together reveal the mysterious and sometimes extraordinary connections within the natural world and the way we understand it through language. My images become stories that take on their own importance after integrating the information. I have a special interest in language and the tools of science, such as graphs and maps. Not only do I believe that text, graphs and maps take on their own artistic beauty, but when grouping them together into new families I am able to create my own visual science exploring the human experience of information to explore the world we live in.

My media varies from ink drawings and etchings to collage and assemblage. The desired concept and outcome usually dictate the process. I spend a lot of time looking through books at historical and scientific information. I do a great deal of planning in the initial stages but have learned to be flexible, as the process will often reveal ways to strengthen an image. I strive for the information to be complete but still challenging, clear but still mysterious. I believe it is the examination of these dichotomies that elevate the human spirit and further our understanding of the world.
