The Bee Course is the most complete education a beekeeper can find outside of a university course. It is also absolutely free. More important, according to instructor James Fischer, it is dogma-free, presenting a pragmatic evidence-based approach unencumbered by mysticism or naivete about bees in a modern urban environment. James Fischer wandered among his beehives in the mountains of Virginia without any formal credentials in entomology at all, but somehow had a very profitable business in pollinating apple trees and selling honey from his 600-hive operation. For more information, visit NYCBeekeeping.org.

Tonight's theme: "Climate Change - The Hard Problem," with Philip Kitcher (Columbia University). The easy problem of climate change is that of determining the reality of anthropogenic (or human-caused) global warming. That problem has been made hard by deficiencies in our democracy. After a brief exploration of these claims, Kitcher will turn to the hard problem, that of ascertaining the extent of the threat to future human well-being and formulating a policy for addressing it. He'll argue that we are forced to proceed in a context in which much of what we would like to know is beyond our epistemic reach, and that successful policies for responding to climate change require an extension of democracy in a global framework. Given the existing problems with what we think of as democracy today, any such extension looks unlikely.

Brooklyn thrives on new ideas. Creative people with a passion to make a product, service or app that will disrupt business as usual need developers with skills to make their dream a reality. The challenge? How to find one another. At the Creative Business + Tech Hack Lab creative entrepreneurs, designers and programmers will connect, discuss their ideas, and build on each others’ skills over the course of an intensive afternoon to create a prototype for their product or service. Prototypes are helpful tools when pitching to funders or starting a crowd-source campaign (like Kickstarter), and will help launch your product or service to a broader network of people hungry for new solutions. Throughout the afternoon you will meet your team members, devise a plan of action and hack together a rapid prototype or proposal. You will present and test your prototype and receive feedback from co-participants. A happy hour will follow at a local Prospect Heights bar. There will also be mini- presentations from local startups focused on creativity and entrepreneurship TBA.

The Creative Business + Tech Hack Lab is free to attend! Please RSVP on our page at Meetup.com to tell us more about you, and who you are looking to connect with: http://www.meetup.com/Brooklyn-Creative-Business-Tech-Hack-Lab/events/162063192/

Say, what's your story? Do your customers know who you are, why you do what you do, and what makes you different, better or more interesting than your competitors? They should! Your story is the foundation on which you build your brand. A strong brand elevates your business above the competitive fray and into the minds and hearts of consumers. Large corporation, small business or solo-preneur: your brand matters. But how do you build a brand that is compelling and engaging? Alan Siege will explore the power of stories and their ability to transform ideas, attitudes, and even beliefs; describe how companies are use stories to recruit, retain, and train staff and employees; tell you why YOU should invest in your own story; give you ways, as a manager and leader, to use story-telling right away; and demonstrate how stories can work for your business.
