Brooklyn Public Library (BPL) is proud to have BRIC Arts | Media | Bklyn as its lead partner in media education. They will offer classes in digital storytelling, photography and video Thursday afternoons and evenings at the Info Commons lab. View listings and register for BRIC classes.

If you would like to be considered as a workshop facilitator or instructor, please bring, mail, or email us a full proposal, including:

  • A detailed description of what you’re interested in teaching or facilitating
  • Any qualifications and experience you have related to the topic
  • Approximately when you would like to conduct the event (month/date as well as time of day)

We will review all proposals on an ongoing basis and get back to applicants as soon as possible. Unfortunately, the Library is unable to offer financial compensation for classes and workshops conducted in the Info Commons.

In this two-hour session, you’ll learn how to use your camera’s features and simple tricks to create beautiful digital images. We’ll cover digital photography basics like camera settings, resolution and exposure levels, and how to properly white balance to make your pictures pop. Composition theory will be discussed, as will shot types and picture formats that work best in video projects. Please bring your own digital camera fully charged, with plenty of battery power and available memory, to the class. In order to successfully complete this class, participants must be able to comfortably navigate a laptop computer and navigate a computer’s interface.

BRIC is also the community media access television organization for Brooklyn, offering residents free access to media production facilities and equipment, low cost media education, and an opportunity to create their own program on Brooklyn Free Speech Television. BRIC offers periodic orientations at the library so that you can become familiar with community access television, their services available, as well as the wide range of in-depth production classes offered at the center. After taking orientation, you will be able to register for their certification classes, and be on your way to producing your own TV show!

In this class, you’ll get hands-on experience with GIMP, a free, versatile photo editing software program, so you can retouch, crop, and color balance your digital photos before showing them to the world. In this two-hour session, you’ll learn how to use your camera’s features and simple tricks to create beautiful digital images. We’ll cover digital photography basics like camera settings, resolution and exposure levels, and how to properly white balance to make your pictures pop. Composition theory will be discussed, as will shot types and picture formats that work best in video projects.
