Closed for Renovation
Due to damage from Hurricane Sandy the Coney Island Library is temporarily closed. Bookmobile Service will be provided on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 11 AM to 4 PM in front of the Coney Island Branch.
The Coney Island Branch started as an unstaffed deposit station in a Surf Avenue store in 1911. It became a fully staffed branch in 1921 after moving to the old offices of the Coney Island Times on Stillwell Ave. In 1954, its new library was called "the first-ever library built on stilts over the Atlantic Ocean."
