    Learn how to use a professional-grade digital video camera, as well as sound equipment, tripods and portable light kits in the field. Successful completion leads to becoming a Certified Community Producer, which gives you free access to use our video equipment to produce your Brooklyn Free Speech TV Show. Students must provide their own headphones for this class. In order to successfully complete this course, students must be comfortable using a computer. This class runs in a series of 3 mandatory sessions on 4/19, 4/26 and 5/03 from 10:00 AM- 2:30PM.

    The picture-perfect shot doesn’t stop with your camera. In this class, you’ll get hands-on experience with Gimp, a free, versatile photo editing software program, so you can retouch, crop, and color balance your digital photos before showing them to the world. We’ll teach you how to use Gimp, its editing and effects tools, talk about photo-editing best practices and how to export for print and video formats. By the end of this two-hour session, you’ll have the skills to make every shot you take a perfect one.

Learn simple steps to turn your still images and sound clips into a compelling digital video story--- and share it with a wide audience. In this two-hour session, you’ll learn about various types of digital story formats, narrative tips and interviewing techniques, and how to combine your pictures and audio recordings into a video using Video Pad, a software program that allows you to create powerful and entertaining media.     Taking pictures is easy. What do you do after you’ve collected the images? In this two-hour session, you’ll learn about best practices for archiving physical and digital photos. Using your images, we’ll create brief oral history projects, allowing you to narrate a personal reflection of within the story found in your pictures. Students will use Videopad to create an exciting video presentation of their oral history.

    If you have a smartphone or tablet, you don’t need an expensive camera or fancy audio equipment to produce an engaging video. In this two-hour session, learn to use your mobile device to make compelling short-form videos—and how to show them to the world on YouTube, Vimeo and more. We’ll start you off with scriptwriting and storyboarding best practices, discuss frame composition, and then cover how to get the best audio and lighting when recording your footage. You’ll also explore the free PC editing software program VideoPad that can assemble it all into your final short masterpiece. Please bring your own pair of headphones or earbuds for this class. In order to successfully complete this class, participants must be able to comfortably navigate a laptop computer and navigate a computer’s interface.

    Most digital cameras are packed with advanced features that allow novice photographers to shoot like a pro. In this two-hour session, you’ll learn how to use your camera’s features and simple tricks to create beautiful digital images. We’ll cover digital photography basics like camera settings, resolution and exposure levels, and how to properly white balance to make your pictures pop. Composition theory will be discussed, as will shot types and picture formats that work best in video projects. Please bring your own digital camera fully charged, with plenty of battery power and available memory, to the class.
