BROOKLYN PUBLIC LIBRARY
ANNOUNCES ANNUAL PHOTO AND ESSAY COMPETITION
My Brooklyn Photo and Essay Contest – Entries due April 1, 2005
Brooklyn Public Library (BPL) is accepting entries for its fourth annual photo and essay competition entitled, My Brooklyn. Sponsored by Con Edison, the contest was created to capture individual thoughts and feelings about the borough of Brooklyn and how it has impacted contestants' lives. The deadline to enter is April 1, 2005.
To enter, each contestant must submit a photograph and a corresponding essay that interprets the image, or relates it to his or her personal experience of Brooklyn. Winning entries will establish a compelling relationship between words and image.
"We are pleased to sponsor My Brooklyn essay and photo contest for the fourth consecutive year," says Ginnie Cooper, Executive Director of Brooklyn Public Library. "Brooklyn has a special meaning in our lives and BPL is proud to give Brooklynites the opportunity to express their thoughts on what this extraordinary place means to them."
The competition includes three age categories: Juvenile (age 12 and under), Young Adult (ages 13-19) and Adults (age 20 and older). Finalists in each division will have their essays and photographs exhibited at BPL's Central Library with prizes awarded in each category for First ($500 U.S. Savings Bond), Second ($300 U.S. Savings) and for four Finalists ($100 U.S. Savings Bond). In addition, separate prizes are awarded for best photographs including First Prize, Second Prize and four Finalists.
All winning photographs and essays will become part of BPL's Brooklyn Collection, a special collection recording the history of Brooklyn from its early beginnings to the present.
