BROOKLYN PUBLIC LIBRARY ANNOUNCES NEW BOARD OF TRUSTEES OFFICERS

Brooklyn Public Library’s (BPL) Board of Trustees is pleased to announce its ELECTION OF OFFICERS FOR 2006.

Thomas Amon was elected Board President. Appointed to the BPL Board of Trustees by Mayor Michael Bloomberg in 2003, Amon has served on several Board subcommittees during his tenure. He was formerly the Vice Chair of BPL’s Finance Committee, Chair of the Finance Subcommittee on Budget and a member of the Library Advancement Committee Subcommittee on Development. He currently serves as a member of the BPL Executive Committee and Chair of the Networking NYC Task Force. He is also a member of the BPL Foundation Board and Board Director of numerous private companies, including Encore Networks Inc. and Venro Petroleum Corp.

Anthony Crowell was elected Board Vice President. Appointed to the BPL Board of Trustees by Mayor Michael Bloomberg in 2003, he serves as a member of the BPL Executive Committee and is Chair of both the Library Advancement Committee and Visual and Performing Arts Advocacy Group. Crowell also serves on the Law and Government Relations Committee and heads the City Charter Revision Commission as chief counsel. Crowell sits on the boards of the NYPD and FDNY Pension Funds, and the City’s Deferred Compensation Plan and Voter Assistance Commission. He is an adjunct professor at both Brooklyn and New York law schools, where he teaches municipal law.

Laura Ensler was elected Board Secretary. Appointed to the BPL Board of Trustees by Mayor Michael Bloomberg in 2003, she serves as a member of the BPL Executive Committee and is Chair of BPL's Library Operations Committee and a member of the VPA Advocacy Group. Ensler, who works with early child care and education clients, such as Visiting Nurse Service of NY and NYC Administration for Children Services, is also a NYC Commissioner for the Mayor's Commission on Women's Issues. Ensler serves on the National Advisory Council of Reading is Fundamental and the national faculty of the Ounce of Prevention Scale Assessment for Pearson Early Learning.

Jerry Garcia was elected Board Treasurer. Appointed to the BPL Board of Trustees by Mayor Michael Bloomberg in 2003, he serves as a member of the BPL Executive Committee and is Chair of the Finance Committee and Investment and Endowment Subcommittee and a member of the Library Advancement Committee Subcommittee on Development. Garcia is also a member of the BPL Foundation Board. He is one of the 13 commissioners on the NYC Charter Revision Commission and is a member of the Board of Directors for New Visions for Public Schools, the largest education reform organization in New York City.
