Library sets an aggressive goal of $500,000 to buy books and materials for its 60 libraries in face of potential budget cuts.

(Brooklyn, NY) March 7, 2011 – Brooklyn Public Library (BPL) announces the kickoff of its third annual spring fundraising campaign, Support Our Shelves. With an aggressive goal of $500,000 for books and other library materials, the campaign encourages every Brooklyn resident to support their local library through donations and advocacy.

Over the past year, the Library has seen increased usage and circulation as Brooklynites take advantage of the free materials, programs, classes and workshops that BPL offers. The campaign comes at a crucial time for BPL, as mid-year budget cuts impact the Library’s collections budget. Support Our Shelves is designed to raise critical funds to keep new books in the branches.

“The need for information in Brooklyn’s communities is changing more rapidly than ever, making the Library’s need to expand its collections more urgent than ever,” said Interim Executive Director Linda E. Johnson. “The Support Our Shelves campaign augments public funding we rely on to provide books, DVDs and electronic resources to our patrons. This year the additional private support is especially critical in view of the cuts in the materials budget we sustained midyear.”

Support Our Shelves is a four-month long fundraising campaign that will help buy books, DVDs, CDs, eBooks and other materials for Brooklyn Public Library. Donations can be designated to a specific branch or for general support.

The campaign has already received strong support from corporate and foundation sponsors. This year’s funders include Brooklyn Community Foundation, and Durst Organization/New York Water Taxi.

To reach even more people this year, Brooklyn Public Library has teamed up with retailer Brooklyn Industries to sell a limited-edition T-shirt. The “I Heart BPL” T-shirt will be available in March at all Brooklyn locations of Brooklyn Industries, as well as in their online store, and will sell for $20. Proceeds will benefit the Support Our Shelves campaign.

Support Our Shelves begins March 1 and ends June 30. Donations can be made directly at local libraries, online at or by phone at 718.230.2738.
