BROOKLYN PUBLIC LIBRARY’S BUSINESS LIBRARY LAUNCHES
BUSINESS PLAN COMPETITION FOR ENTREPRENEURS
(Brooklyn, NY) January 27, 2009 - Brooklyn Public Library’s (BPL) Business Library in conjunction with sponsor Citi Foundation launches “PowerUP: Your Business Starts Here,” the sixth annual business plan competition for Brooklyn-based entrepreneurs with cash prizes totaling $25,000.
The first place winner of the Business Library competition will receive $15,000 with two runners-up each receiving $5,000. In addition, winners will receive business services worth thousands of dollars.
The competition connects entrepreneurs with the information they need to write a business plan, from market trends and demographics to bookkeeping principles and sample plans. Additionally the Business Library partners with local business assistance providers to introduce contestants to the array of free services available to help them succeed.
The competition is open to entrepreneurs who are starting businesses in Brooklyn. All entrants will receive instruction in how to write a business plan, a marketing plan and financial statements, as well as make a presentation. In order to be eligible to apply, Brooklyn residents, 18 years and older, who are either U.S. citizens or U.S. permanent residents, must attend one PowerUP! orientation session at one of the following locations and times:

After attending an orientation session, applicants have until May 1, 2009, to submit an application for consideration. After meeting eligibility criteria, applicants will attend at least two classes during the months of May and June on business plan writing, marketing, budgeting and making a presentation. They will then be required to submit their business plan by September 14, 2009. A panel of judges will review the plans and choose finalists who will continue to the last stage of the competition when each finalist will be required to make a presentation of his or her business plan.
Citi Foundation is BPL’s Business Library corporate sponsor of educational programs and has been an annual supporter of the Business Library since 2000.
