FREE ENGLISH LANGUAGE CLASSES OFFERED
AT BROOKLYN PUBLIC LIBRARY
Registration starts this Saturday, September 10!

The Adult Literacy Program at Brooklyn Public Library (BPL) will offer free English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) classes for adults at 14 select neighborhood libraries from September through December, 2005. Beginner and intermediate-level English learners who wish to participate must register in person at one of the five registration sites – Williamsburgh Library, Ryder Library, Midwood Library, Park Slope Library or Brighton Beach Library. During the registration, BPL applicants will meet with BPL Adult Literacy staff and take a test to assess their class level.

In the past year, BPL's ESOL program helped to meet the needs of over 800 of Brooklyn's adult English language learners. The students have come from over 70 countries and range in age from 18-60 years old.

In addition to helping students master the English language, BPL's ESOL classes include a civics component to help new Americans become more active in their communities. Discussions on America citizenship offer students information on navigating government, educational, health and workplace systems. Adult learners also learn how to make full use of the library; BPL's instructors explain how to borrow library items, do research and participate in other free programs.
