Donating Library Materials

Change in Book Donation Policy (Effective July 1, 2011):

Why does Brooklyn Public Library (BPL) no longer accept donations of books and other material from the public?
Donated books and other materials incur costs and additional time to process. Before they can be shelved with the larger collection, their condition must be evaluated, followed by cataloging, processing and transporting. These materials ultimately have a shorter shelf life. It is more cost-efficient to purchase new books and media, which are delivered "shelf-ready."

Will donations still be accepted for library book sales led by Friends Groups or other organizations?
Yes, but donations will be accepted for these book sales only. Friends Groups at select libraries will continue to hold book sales to support BPL. The Great American Book Drive, hosted by Better World Books, will also be held annually in October at Central Library. Better World Books, a global bookstore, sells and recycles the books donated at this drive; proceeds go toward BPL. We also continue to work with this organization to find useful means for the older materials that we must discard from our own collection.

Are there other organizations that will accept donations of books and other material?
Yes, below is a list of organizations that will accept these much appreciated donations.

How else can I contribute to BPL?
Your monetary contribution to the Library will help us buy new books and media for our libraries. Large and small donations help BPL offset budget cuts to continue growing our valuable collection. Donate today.
