Brooklyn Public Library Debuts Where the Wild Things Are Library Card

Isaac Mizrahi Joins BPL to Present Cards to Students from PS 118, the Maurice Sendak Community School

Boroughwide Celebration Saturday to Highlight Importance of Storytime, Need for Seven-Day Library Service

Brooklyn, NY—Brooklyn Public Library’ s patrons can sign up for a new library card featuring artwork from Maurice Sendak’s classic children’s book Where the Wild Things Are, the Library announced today. Second-graders from PS 118, the Maurice Sendak Community School, received the cards at an event at Central Library this morning. Brooklyn-born fashion designer, artist and performer Isaac Mizrahi joined BPL to read Where the Wild Things Are with the students.

Where the Wild Things Are has been a favorite at Brooklyn Public Library’s story times for more than fifty years,” said BPL President and CEO Linda E. Johnson. “The new library card, featuring Max and two of his most terrible monsters, is a tribute to one of Brooklyn’s greatest authors and one of the most beloved children’s books ever published.”

The new cards will be issued to all new library card applicants under the age of 13, while supplies last. They will be also be available for free to all patrons (regardless of age) by request. Wild Things fans of all ages can use their library card to get a personalized reading list from a BPL librarian with the Library's free BookMatch service.

On Saturday, April 1, BPL’s branches will incorporate Where the Wild Things Are read-alouds and activities into their Storytime programs. The events will raise awareness for the importance of Saturday Storytime programming, the expansion of which was made possible by the city’s increased investment in public libraries two years ago. If the library systems’ budget request for FY2018 is approved, nearly one-third of Brooklyn’s public libraries would be open every day of the week, increasing the number of Saturday and Sunday Storytimes that librarians could host for the public.
