Brooklyn Public Library Celebrates National Bike Month with Installation of Permanent Bike Repair Station

Mill Basin Library is First Library in New York City to Host Fixing to Ride Station

Brooklyn, NY–Brooklyn Public Library today celebrated the opening of a new permanent bike repair station, free and open to the public. The repair station will be open 24 hours a day, seven days a week outside the Mill Basin Library.

“Libraries have always been a place to turn for information and assistance so we are delighted to present this new repair station along with educational workshops and programs on bike safety and tips for commuting,” said Nick Higgins, Brooklyn Public Library Chief Librarian

The Fixing to Ride station includes an air pump, hanger arms, screwdrivers, wrenches, tire levers and air pump. The Library will also host workshops on bike commuting, safety and repairs, and kid-friendly cycle crafts and story times.

“The Fixing to Ride station at the Mill Basin Library is a great resource for bike riders,” said Council Member Alan Maisel. “Not only will bike riders have access to the 24-hour repair station, they can also take advantage of the various workshops pertaining to bike safety and repairs. In this era of alternative and eco-friendly modes of transportation this is a program that hopefully will expand to other areas of the city.”

New Yorkers average 490,000 bike trips every day and there has been a dramatic increase in riders over the last decade.

“This innovative project by Mill Basin Library is fostering a sustainable culture in southern Brooklyn by encouraging cycling and preventing used bikes from ending up in landfills. The goal of this grant is to support New Yorkers in their efforts to find creative ways to reduce the amount of trash we create as a city, and this is a great step in this effort. I’m thrilled that Citizens Committee is able to help promote safe cycling and environmentally-friendly practices through its support of Mill Basin Library’s Fixing to Ride program,” said Peter H. Kostmayer, CEO, Citizens Committee for New York City.

Support for Fixing to Ride is provided by the Citizen's Committee for New York City, the Manhattan Solid Waste Advisory Group and Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer.
