Select Group of Outdoor Programs Planned for September
September 10, 2020—Brooklyn Public Library will open an additional six branches for limited, grab-and-go service beginning on Monday, September 14. The additional locations—Kensington, Midwood, Mill Basin, Walt Whitman, Washington Irving and the Annex (Dumbo) —bring the total the number of open branches to 23. A complete list of all open branches is below.
Patrons across the city now have the opportunity to return books and pick up materials placed on hold. Masks are required and social distancing guidelines will be enforced. Returned materials will be quarantined for 96 hours in accordance with guidelines from public health officials and Reopening Archives, Libraries and Museums (REALM), a research partnership between OCLC (a global library cooperative), the Institute of Museum and Library Services, and Battelle (a nonprofit science and research organization).
In addition, the Library has a growing selection of outdoor programs planned including census tailgate parties with live music and back-to-school-giveaways; Game On, an afternoon of videogames, basketball skills, challenges, raffles, and more for teens outside of Brownsville Library; University Open Air, a free series of classes taught by professors, researchers, and academics who were trained outside of the U.S. in partnership with Prospect Park Alliance; and Cinema Ephemera, an eclectic mix of artist film shorts, concert footage, vintage video games, studio visits with children's illustrators and more, projected on the facade of the iconic Central Library after sunset.
BPL also maintains a thriving virtual library. Since early March, the Library has hosted nearly 2500 programs online for people of all ages including 10 story times a week, adult education classes, and services for those seeking employment with a one-on-one resume service and job search workshops. In addition, BPL provides access to digital resources including Lynda.com, language classes and eBooks and audiobooks.
Brooklyn Public Library also offers services by phone including a call-in reference desk, daily dial-a-story, and a telephone buddy program for older adults. The latest news, schedules and virtual programs can be found here.
