Brooklyn Public Library Announces Open Invitation to “People’s Ball”

Celebrating Community, Style, Fashion and Freedom Sunday, September 12 Starting at 7 P.M.Central Library at Grand Army Plaza

BROOKLYN, NY (July 13, 2021)—Brooklyn Public Library (BPL) today announced the second edition of the People’s Ball, inviting everyday New Yorkers to walk the runway, showing off their personal style and creativity, while embracing fashion as an act of individual expression and creative freedom.

Standing in stark contrast to ultra-exclusive fashion galas, the People’s Ball is a free and open-to-all event, providing a platform for fashion innovators to take center stage on Sunday, September 12 from 7 to 11 p.m. in the Grand Lobby of the historic Central Library at Grand Army Plaza.

BPL’s Central Library will be outfitted with a catwalk, open for 15 minutes every hour, for attendees to show off their most creative ensembles. Partygoers are invited to dance to music from local DJs throughout the night. In addition, BPL is partnering with Ouigi Theodore, founder of Brooklyn Circus, and Makayla Wray, high fashion designer and mobile street cart tailor, to highlight local leaders in fashion. Additional details of these partnerships will be announced in the coming weeks.

“As Brooklyn continues to open back up, we’re excited to welcome Brooklynites from all walks of life to the newly renovated Grand Lobby to celebrate the exceptional creativity and energy of our communities,” said László Jakab Orsós, Vice President of Arts and Culture at Brooklyn Public Library. “BPL is committed to breaking down barriers and ensuring that all New Yorkers have the opportunity to experience the cultural riches that our great borough has to offer, and the People’s Ball offers a platform for the diversity of style, swagger, pride – and free, non-transactional and happy time together.”

Through programs like the People’s Ball, BPL creates experiences that strengthen the fabric of community by providing a space for people from all walks of life to make their voices heard. BPL continues to redefine libraries as centers for ideas and exploration, providing accessible events such as the People’s Ball to showcase the cultural and social diversity of Brooklyn’s residents.

The event is free, but RSVPs are encouraged. Follow @bplpresents for updates about special guest hosts, DJs, and food and drink specials, and join the conversation and share photos by tagging #BPLPeoplesBall and #BPLPresents.
