Brooklyn Public Library to Exhibit Museum of Science Fiction Architectural Design Competition Winners

Washington, DC (Feb. 3, 2015)–The Museum of Science Fiction, the world’s first comprehensive science fiction museum, will showcase the winners of its Architectural Design Competition for the first time outside of Washington, DC. Beginning on February 12, Brooklyn Public Library will display all of the winning entries, as well as several of the other top submissions, at Central Library. The design exhibit is sponsored by Google, DreamHost, and Singularity & Co. Admission is free to the public and the entries will be displayed until late May.

The winner of the competition was announced on September 25; a design by Emily Yen from the Rhode Island School of Design was selected over hundreds of registrations received from 46 different countries. Her design is being used to inform the cubic architecture for the Museum of Science Fiction’s planned 2015 preview museum to be built in the metropolitan Washington, DC, area.

The Preview Museum is designed to be a modular, re-deployable 4,000 square-foot facility that can be moved to another city after the full-size museum is completed.

“We're thrilled to bring these beautiful architectural designs to New York City,” said Jerry Vanek, Lead Architect for the Museum. “Brooklyn Public Library has been a fantastic partner, and I hope everyone from the five boroughs and beyond gets a chance to come and see the exhibit.”

“The Library is honored to exhibit the most exciting and innovative entries to the Museum of Science Fiction’s Architectural Design Competition,” said Meredith Walters, Brooklyn Public Library’s Director of Programs and Exhibitions. “We plan to offer film screenings and other programming to enhance visitors’ experience of these remarkable designs.”

Following its appearance at Brooklyn Public Library, the Museum of Science Fiction is planning for the exhibit to tour Los Angeles, Milan, Mexico City, Hong Kong, Tokyo, Seoul, Mumbai, Berlin, Moscow, and London.
