BROOKLYN, NY—Councilmember Chi Ossé joined Brooklyn Public Library President and CEO Linda Johnson for a Halloween celebration at the Macon Library. Patrons of all ages gathered to enjoy this block party-style gathering, featuring music and a special performance organized by the Friends of Macon Library. Tales of a Dead End Diner was a live theatrical outdoors Halloween experience which ran every 20 minutes throughout the evening.
“I was proud to allocate funding Macon Library, a Bed-Stuy gem, for critical repairs. Spending time with the library’s staff and families was a really special way to cap off my Halloween, and I’m grateful to see just how many people will benefit from improvements to our critical community spaces,” said New York City Councilmember Chi Ossé. “The joy I saw on each face (or at least those not obscured by a Spider-Man mask) is exactly why we do the work of public service.”
Councilmember Ossé, Chair of the City Council Committee on Cultural Affairs, Libraries, and International Intergroup Relations, recently provided $1 million dollars for Macon Library’s new roof.
“We are grateful to Council Member Chi Ossé for his continued commitment to the city’s public libraries and for his generous support of the historic Macon Library, which will provide for a much need roof repair, keeping our books dry and allowing patrons to enjoy the library for another hundred years to come,” said Linda E. Johnson, President and CEO, Brooklyn Public Library.
Macon Library is one of the best-preserved Carnegie branches in Brooklyn. Opened in 1907, the two-story, Classical Revival-style building retains its original fireplaces, oak paneling, alcoves and wooden benches, along with the warm charm that has welcomed patrons for more than one hundred years. The Dionne Mack-Harvin Center, Macon Library's African American Heritage Center, contains material on African American history and culture as well as the "Preserving Footsteps" collection. A landmark in the heart of a richly historic neighborhood, Macon Library is primed to continue serving patrons for many years to come. Friends of Macon Library is a group of organized volunteers who help our neighborhood library through advocacy, fundraising and promotion.
