Brooklyn, NY—Kings Bay Library took top honors in Brooklyn Public Library’s robotics championship over the weekend, besting 15 teams from libraries around the borough for first place. Cortelyou Library and New Lots Library took second and third place respectively.
The Brooklyn Public Library Robotics League, in partnership with NYC First, provides young people, ages 9 to 17, the opportunity to learn about STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) by coding, building and programming robotics. Along the way, participants gain valuable skills in teamwork, communication, critical thinking and problem solving.
“The BKLYN Robotics League championship tournament is one of the loudest and liveliest days at Central Library and we look forward to it every year. Friends and families gather to cheer on their favorite teams and see the culmination of young patrons’ hard work building and programming robots. Congratulations to Kings Bay Library and all of this year’s participants, and thank you to the volunteers, parents, caregivers and librarians who supported them,” said Linda E. The theme for this year was Masterpiece, focusing on new ways to create and communicate art worldwide. Teams worked for approximately four months to build program and code a robot to accomplish tasks like placing artwork on a pedestal and move it safely to a museum or moving a camera across a dolly to shoot a movie. Participants were also evaluated on gracious professionalism® and communication skills
The three top teams will participate in a citywide semi-final on March 3.
The BKLYN Robotics League is just one of a series of technology programs for people of all ages at Brooklyn Public Library, including T4, BPL’s technology internship and volunteer program; free courses in computer basics, coding, Photoshop, audio editing, 3-D printing and more; and Teen Tech Centers at the Adams Street, Bay Ridge, Crown Heights, Kings Highway, and Saratoga Libraries
