New Lots Library Wins NYC Neighborhood Library Award

Brooklyn Public Library’s New Lots branch has been honored for its service to patrons with an NYC Neighborhood Library Award, presented by the Stavros Niarchos Foundation and the Charles H. Revson Foundation. Each winning branch received $20,000, the nation's largest cash prize awarded directly to branch libraries.

Library patrons submitted more than 13,000 nominations for this year’s awards. In nominating New Lots, a patron declared that the branch “helps people in our community better themselves and become a contributing part of society.” New Lots Library joins 2014 Brooklyn winners Macon and Sheepshead Bay.

“Like all of our 60 branches, New Lots Library is a trusted and treasured institution in the neighborhood it serves,” said Brooklyn Public Library President and CEO Linda Johnson. “We are proud of the branch’s staff and volunteers for earning this well-deserved recognition.”

The branch has served East New York in its current location since 1957. Among its most widely used features is a learning center that helps adults develop literacy skills to meet their personal, educational and employment goals. Earlier this month, New York City Council Member Inez Barron joined New Lots Library patrons, staff and community members at the kickoff of the branch's new oral history project, which will collect Brooklynites' unique experiences for preservation in the Library of Congress.
