Corporate and Group Volunteer Opportunities

Brooklyn Public Library is actively seeking volunteers for 2024!

Summer reading corporate volunteers at Brooklyn Public Library

The mission of the volunteer program at BPL is to enhance public service through the engagement of diverse and dedicated volunteers. Corporate volunteerism provides opportunities for team building, to give back to the community and to fulfill Corporate Social Responsibility objectives. Volunteering at BPL is a great way for your employees, clients, colleagues and their families to contribute their unique talents, skills and knowledge and assist staff. Volunteers provide personalized attention to patrons, support library initiatives through public programming and events, and share information about the library.

Large-Scale Events

Brooklyn Public Library hosts several large events each year which are perfect for groups of volunteers to learn more about the library, bond as a team and meet like-minded people in their community.

  • Summer Reading Kick-Off: Brooklyn Public Library’s annual event to promote the Summer Reading campaign. Volunteer responsibilities include signing up children and their parents and guardians for Summer Reading and facilitating children’s activities. Event is held every June.
  • Big Brooklyn Book Sale: A campaign in partnership with Better World Books to turn the used books into support for the library. Volunteer responsibilities include sorting books; collecting donations, and leading arts and crafts activities. Event is held every October.

Special Projects

One-time group projects are a great way become involved in your local community and support the library.

  • Public Programs: With staff support, volunteers can lead classes and workshops on subjects in which they are proficient. A few examples include technology classes; resume writing and interview workshops; Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) programs serving teens and Summer Reading outreach programs.
  • Beautification Projects: Beautification projects aim to make our libraries as welcoming as possible through restoration projects, gardening, fence painting and decorating children’s areas.
  • Summer Meals: The Summer Food Service Program (Summer Meals) is a federal child nutrition program that provides funding for meals and snacks served to children age 18 and younger during the summer. Volunteers responsibilities include the distribution of lunches; monitoring meal space; and keep a tally of the number of patrons served. Service is provided June through September at select library locations.

"We have many proud cyclists on our team, many of whom live in Brooklyn, and they love to participate in Bike the Branches because it gives them a chance to visit the borough’s many great neighborhoods while promoting literacy and raising awareness of BPL’s many free resources."
